GAT-X102 Duel by xxLelouchxx67 GAT-X102 Duel by xxLelouchxx67
MG 1/100 Duel Gundam that I picked up shortly after its release. Unfortunately, didn't get around to working on it until almost a month later, leaving it sitting in my closet for a while before I finally got some free time to crack open the box and start on this sucker.

All told, Bandai really did this suit justice with a MG treatment; I have no idea why they've decided to go back and make MG's of the old SEED mobile suits (wait...isn't it Gundam Seed's 10th anniversary this year?) but I'm extremely happy about it; planning to pick up all the GAT machines as they're released. I've always been fond of the Duel (unlike many others who dislikied SEED altogether) and felt that it, like it's brother units the Buster, Aegis, and Blitz, were horribly underappreciated.

Bandai went all out with this kit and gave it an entire rehaul, adding a massive load of detail to the armor ('specially the Assault Shroud) and gave it more badass looking proportions.

Really giddy about the opening cockpit feature on this MG; if only for the fact that the Duel has a rather...interesting abdominal area, making designing an opening cockpit for the section a bit tricky, but Bandai once again came through and pulled it off flawlessly. :)

I really like the Duel Gundam without its Assault Shroud. Great job! Well done.:D

Yeah, same here; I prefer it without the bulky armor. Thanks! :D

Ever since Bandai announced this baby I've wanted it but I haven't had the budget to get one yet. I'm curious on how it went together, any problems? I loved SEED's mecha designs and the GAT line was one of my favorites.

It's actually engineered really well; simple build and very vertisile frame. Plastic is as you would expect of Bandai; didn't have any trouble breaking or snapping anything. Overall it was just a really great build with lots of innovative gimmicks build into the suit. :)

Is this the same as the assault shroud just minus armor? Please forgive my noobness! :)

Yup, this is the Duel in it's basic production form. The Assault Shroud was an add-on from later in the war. (if you watched the series.) :)

I for one have always appreciated the technical aspect of the art for SEED. The machines were always well designed, though it got a little ridiculous with DESTINY. The GAT series of suits always intrigued me - I noticed that the X102 and X105 were practically identical in terms of armament (Assault Shroud and Striker Packs notwithstanding). The XHundred denomination seems to me to indicate the frame type : The X100's (Duel, Strike, and Buster) are fairly basic mobile suit frames with different specializations, culminating in Strike's modularity for specific missions. The X200's (Blitz, and later Forbidden) appear to be based around energy manipulation technology- Blitz's mirage colloid's manipulation of light and Forbidden's beam manipulation. the X300's (Aegis and Raider) were transformable frames, with Aegis having it's mobile armor mode and Raider having a bird-like flight mode that may-or-mjay-not have been a rip-off of Wing Gundam.

Did you ever get that far into thinking about it?

That's an interesting and very logical analysis of the frames...I never really thought to look deeper into their actual X Numbers...I kinda just figured that they were all based off the Duel, shared the same frame, and were really cool machines. :)

You're right though; Duel, Strike, and Buster are more artillery and standard-use based, while the Blitz and Aegis do make use of some interesting and unique technology. Aegis was supposed to be the commander unit too, though...

The soon-to-be-released MG Blitz kinda looks like it shares the same X Frame as the Duel...can't tell for sure, but it certainly does steal a bit or two of the Duel's external armor, to show that they're sibling suits. I figure the Aegis will be the most standout and unique one among them, due to it's generally unorthodox transforming nature.

Well, yeah, I kinda spent too long on MAHQ dot net a couple years back, and read up all of the specs one basically every mobile suit in every Gundam series I'd seen up to that point. Kept me occupied, and I can draw mobile suits in a variety of styles, now, but I spent so long drawing mobile suits that the actual character design aspect of my 'art' had fallen waaaay behind. I think I might dabble in a bit more of it though, if for nothing else than to get my wanna-be fantasy webcomic some more views.

I mean, heck, my Zelda fanwork I made as concept suggestions for UndyingNephalim's Hyrule Total War mod (for Medieval II Total War) has so many views.... my ten pages of comic combined don't have nearly as many views as just one of the Link concepts! Oh well, I made peace with that reality when I saw the trend first start.

But yeah, thanks. I kinda nerd out over certain topics. Gundam just happens to be one of them!
